Meet Hamish McLaren

Welcome!
My name is Hamish McLaren

I grew up here in Wellington, and my family and I have returned to raise our children and enjoy this wonderful city. I absolutely love Wellington, the Kapiti Coast, Hutt Valley, and Wairarapa. In my free time, I enjoy fishing and spearfishing along the coast, mountain biking the hills, walking the riverbanks, and supporting the Hurricanes and Lions at the stadium.

A strong relationship with your surgeon is built on trust. Your surgeon should assess you carefully, understand your goals, and recommend the best treatment—whether non-operative or operative. Being well-informed about your condition and treatment options is key. You need to trust your surgeon's expertise in providing high-quality, evidence-based care. Most importantly, if complications arise, your surgeon must take responsibility and manage them promptly and compassionately.

With my local knowledge of the people of greater Wellington and the Wairarapa, comprehensive New Zealand training and two years of sub-specialist training, I feel I can offer all my patients high quality, modern and compassionate care that results in excellent outcomes and satisfied patients.

I was trained through the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association training system, working at several hospitals in the North Island under the supervision of 40 orthopaedic surgeons. I earned my Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship in 2020.

I have always been passionate about hip and knee reconstruction. Robotic arm assistance has been used overseas for 15 years and has been mainstream for 7 years, offering unparalleled accuracy. I chose Australia for sub-specialist training because they have been using robotic arms for hip and knee replacements for 7 years and are leaders in robotic-assisted joint surgery.

I completed a 6-month fellowship with Gary Hooper and Rod Maxwell at Burwood and St. George’s Hospitals in Christchurch, focusing on uncemented joint replacement, unicompartmental knee replacement, and revision joint replacement. Additionally, I completed 6 months of foot and ankle sub-specialisation at Gold Coast University Hospital.

I worked with Ross Crawford at Prince Charles and St. Vincent’s Hospitals for a year, performing over 250 robotic hip and knee joint replacements. I also undertook and helped publish research in this field.

My values

These values collectively shape the culture and ethos of everything I do, guiding my actions, decisions, and interactions with clients.

Building strong relationships

I believe trust is the foundation of good care. Even when things don’t go as planned, maintaining open, honest communication ensures my patients feel supported and confident in their treatment. A strong relationship with your surgeon makes all the difference in your journey.

Leading through innovation

I’m always looking for the most advanced and effective ways to treat my patients. Robotic joint replacement technology is transforming orthopaedic surgery, and I use the latest tools to provide precision, accuracy, and better outcomes. Innovation allows me to offer cutting-edge treatments that improve recovery and quality of life.

Commited to excellence

Excellence isn’t just a goal—it’s a constant pursuit. I stay up-to-date with global advancements in orthopaedics and bring those techniques to my patients here in New Zealand. Every procedure I perform is an opportunity to provide the best care possible, ensuring the highest level of precision and success in each surgery.

Delivering quality

My commitment to quality is unwavering. When it comes to joint replacements, I ensure the implants I use are durable and designed to significantly improve my patients’ lives. Quality care means long-lasting results, fewer complications, and a better overall experience for my patients.

Empowering through education

I believe that informed patients make the best decisions about their health. That’s why I take the time to ensure my patients fully understand their procedures, the risks, and what to expect post-surgery. By empowering patients with knowledge, I help them feel more confident and in control of their journey to recovery.
